Lining the Highway for AAC Awareness Month 2024!

October is AAC Awareness Month, a time dedicated to fostering understanding of AAC across the globe. At Forbes AAC, we believe that communication is a fundamental right for everyone, and we are excited to kick off this important month with a social media campaign that amplifies the voices of Individuals who use AAC, their families, and the clinicians who support them.

This year, we posed a simple yet powerful question: “If you had a billboard about AAC that the world saw, what would it say?”

  • The responses we received have been nothing short of powerful. From Individuals who use AAC to their loved ones and speech-language pathologists (SLPs), each person’s message offers a unique perspective on how AAC empowers communication, fosters autonomy, and transforms lives.

Throughout October, we will be sharing these responses in the form of digital billboards to foster AAC awareness by lining the highway. Each graphic will feature the personalized message of an individual from the AAC community, boldly declaring what they would like society to know about AAC.

  • These "billboards" will appear across our social media platforms, providing a daily reminder of the importance of inclusive, effective, and efficient communication modalities and practices.

Our hope is that these billboard messages will inspire conversations, build understanding, and challenge misperceptions about AAC. Whether you are familiar with AAC or hearing about it for the first time, this campaign aims to remind the world that everyone deserves the opportunity to be heard, valued, and included in all areas of life—no matter how they communicate.

To give you a preview of what is to come, here are a few examples of the impactful messages you will see throughout the month:

These are just a few of the many powerful messages we will be sharing. Each one is a reminder that all voices should be heard and valued.

Want to see the rest of the billboards that are lining the highway? We encourage you to follow along with the campaign on our social media channels and share these empowering messages with your own networks. By amplifying these voices, together we can make the world more inclusive and accessible for those who use AAC.

AAC Awareness Month is a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on the diverse experiences of those who use AAC. Every individual who uses AAC has a story to tell, and we want to ensure those stories are heard. Whether it is debunking myths, advocating for access to AAC, celebrating successes, or recognizing challenges, this month is about amplifying voices that deserve to be recognized and valued.

Let’s make this AAC Awareness Month a time of celebration, learning, and advocacy. Whether you are someone who uses AAC, a family member, or a professional, your voice matters. Let’s line the highway this month to raise awareness and ensure everyone’s voice is heard—because communication is a right, not a privilege.

Stay tuned, share the billboards, and be part of the conversation!
